Field Marshal Bernard "Monty" Montgomery was the most famous British general of WW2. His victory at El Alamein in October-November 1942 was the first major Allied land victory of the war and a turning point in the North African campaign. He went on to command all Allied ground forces during the D-Day landings and the subsequent liberation of Northwest Europe.Montgomery was a controversial figure — meticulous, cautious, and not always easy to work with — but he was immensely popular with his troops. His distinctive beret and personal manner became symbols of British determination.
