Sergeant Meliton Kantaria, together with Sergeant Mikhail Yegorov, raised the Soviet Victory Banner over the Reichstag in Berlin on 30 April 1945, creating one of the most iconic images of the war. A Georgian by birth, Kantaria had fought through the entire war from the defence of the Caucasus to the fall of Berlin. The moment the red banner was raised became the symbol of Soviet victory and is commemorated annually. A Brighton history teacher registered his story.
