Margaret Doyle

Leading Wren Margaret Doyle served at HMS Western Approaches in Liverpool, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Born in Bootle, she joined the Women's Royal Naval Service in 1941 at age 19. Working in the underground operations room beneath Derby House, she plotted convoy routes and tracked U-boat movements across the Atlantic. Her meticulous work contributed directly to the protection of thousands of merchant sailors. After the war she married a Royal Navy officer and remained in Liverpool, where she became a prominent local historian documenting the city's wartime role.
