Margaret Campbell

Staff Nurse Margaret Campbell served with Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, landing in Normandy just weeks after D-Day. She worked in a field hospital near Bayeux, treating wounded soldiers from all nations. Campbell cared for hundreds of casualties during the Normandy breakout and the advance through France. She followed the advancing troops into Belgium and the Netherlands, setting up temporary hospitals in schools and churches. Born in East Belfast, she had trained as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital before volunteering for the Army. She returned to Belfast after the war and worked at the Mater Hospital for 30 years.
