Biography
Nurse Margaret Blackwood served with Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS). She was among the first nurses to arrive in Normandy after D-Day, treating casualties at field hospitals near the front lines. She cared for wounded soldiers through the advance across France and into Germany, witnessing the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the war she moved to Leeds and became matron at St James's University Hospital.
