Margaret Bevan

Leading Wren Margaret Bevan worked in the top-secret Operations Room beneath Derby House in Liverpool, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. She plotted convoy and U-boat positions on a giant wall map, working 8-hour watches around the clock. Commander-in-Chief Admiral Max Horton and his staff used this map to direct escort groups to defend convoys. Margaret later said the tension was unbearable when convoys were under attack and they could see markers disappearing from the board.
