Guardsman Idris Morgan of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards landed in Normandy on D+6 and fought through the brutal Battle of the Bocage — the hedgerow fighting that slowed the Allied advance through Normandy. The close-quarter combat in the sunken lanes and high hedgerows of Normandy was particularly deadly, with casualties among infantry units reaching 90% in some companies. Morgan's platoon was reduced from 30 men to 7 during Operation Goodwood. He fought through the liberation of Brussels, the battle for the Escaut Canal, and the advance into Germany. After the war, he returned to Cardiff and worked in the coal industry, becoming an active member of the Welsh Guards Association.
