Vasiliy Dmitrievich Makarov

Lieutenant / Foot Reconnaissance Platoon Commander. Date of birth: 12 January 1923. Still alive. My beloved grandfather Vasiliy Dmitrievich Makarov was born on 12 January 1923 in Russia, in the Verkhoshizhemskiy District, Kirov Region, in the village of Bolshiye Medyantsy. Vasiliy began fighting very young — after training courses, he served as a scout on the Finnish border. During the Second World War he was a scout in an airborne division, dropped behind enemy lines, and later served as a foot reconnaissance platoon commander. Place of service: Zuyevka, Kirov Region; Ukrainian Front; Eastern Siberian Military District. He fought all the way to Austria, then was transferred to Manchuria on the Chinese border, where the war ended. He was wounded several times in the head and back. He still feels the effects of those wounds to this day. He has been awarded many decorations: medals for Valour, the Red Star, the Red Banner, and others. He was also awarded the Order of Glory 3rd Class and the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class for bravery, steadfastness and courage in the fight against the Nazi invaders. So many years have passed since the war ended, but the stories about it live on in the memory of our grandfathers. We are proud, we remember, and we love!
