Lydia Alexandrovna Semyonova

Captain Lydia Semyonova served as a military surgeon at a field hospital on the Leningrad Front throughout the 872-day siege. Working in conditions of extreme cold, constant bombardment, and severe shortage of medical supplies, she performed hundreds of operations. She survived the siege's starvation winter of 1941-42, losing half her body weight. After the war she became a professor of surgery in Leningrad and later moved to Brighton.
