Biography
Sergeant Leonard Okonkwo, born in Lagos to a Nigerian father and English mother, grew up in Cambridge and volunteered for the RAF in 1940. He trained as a navigator and flew thirty bombing missions over Germany with 115 Squadron based at RAF Witchford near Ely. One of very few Black aircrew in Bomber Command, he earned the Distinguished Flying Medal for his coolness during a mission where his Lancaster was badly damaged by flak over the Ruhr. He survived the war and worked as an engineer at the Cambridge University Press.

Сержант Леонард Оконкво, родившийся в Лагосе от нигерийского отца и английской матери, вырос в Кембридже и пошёл добровольцем в RAF в 1940 году. Он прошёл подготовку штурмана и совершил тридцать бомбардировочных вылетов над Германией в 115-й эскадрилье. Один из немногих чернокожих членов экипажей Бомбардировочного командования, он получил Медаль за выдающиеся заслуги в полёте. После войны работал инженером в издательстве Кембриджского университета.
