Leo Major

Sergeant Leo Major was a French-Canadian soldier who performed extraordinary feats. Blinded in one eye by a phosphorus grenade in Normandy, he refused to be evacuated. In April 1945, he single-handedly liberated the Dutch city of Zwolle by running through the streets at night, firing weapons and throwing grenades to convince the Germans they were under full assault. The Germans withdrew and the city was freed without Allied casualties. A Cambridge military historian registered this remarkable story.
