Engine Room Artificer Lachlan Stuart from Glasgow served aboard HMS Belfast on Arctic Convoy duty and during the D-Day landings. He kept the engines running in extreme conditions—temperatures below decks often reached 120°F while the sea outside was near freezing. HMS Belfast helped sink the Scharnhorst at the Battle of the North Cape and was one of the first ships to open fire on D-Day morning, bombarding German positions on Gold and Juno beaches.
