Biography

Lieutenant John McKinlay was a Glaswegian who served with the Glider Pilot Regiment, flying Horsa gliders into Normandy on D-Day. After landing under fire, glider pilots were expected to fight as infantry — making them unique among aircrew. McKinlay led his men in fierce fighting to secure the bridges over the Orne Canal. He was killed two days after D-Day during a German counterattack. The Glider Pilot Regiment suffered very high casualties but their silent approach achieved complete surprise.

Biography (Russian)
