Biography

John Cruickshank was the last surviving British VC recipient of WW2. As a Catalina flying boat pilot, he attacked and sank U-347 in the North Atlantic in July 1944 despite being severely wounded by return fire — 72 separate wounds. He continued to pilot the aircraft for over five hours back to base, making a perfect landing. He lived in Edinburgh until his death at 103, the oldest VC holder in history.

Будучи пилотом летающей лодки «Каталина», он атаковал и потопил подводную лодку U-347 в Северной Атлантике в июле 1944 года, несмотря на 72 ранения от ответного огня. Он продолжал управлять самолётом более пяти часов до базы, совершив идеальную посадку.
