John Cruickshank was the last surviving British VC recipient of WW2. As a Catalina flying boat pilot, he attacked and sank U-347 in the North Atlantic in July 1944 despite being severely wounded by return fire — 72 separate wounds. He continued to pilot the aircraft for over five hours back to base, making a perfect landing. He lived in Edinburgh until his death at 103, the oldest VC holder in history.

Джон Крукшенк был последним живым британским кавалером Креста Виктории времён Второй мировой войны. Будучи пилотом летающей лодки «Каталина», он атаковал и потопил подводную лодку U-347 в Северной Атлантике в июле 1944 года, несмотря на 72 ранения от ответного огня. Он продолжал управлять самолётом более пяти часов до базы, совершив идеальную посадку.
