John Akuffo

John Akuffo was a Ghanaian soldier who served with the Royal West African Frontier Force in the Burma campaign. West African soldiers played a crucial role in the reconquest of Burma, fighting in the Arakan and at the crossings of the Irrawaddy River. After the war, Akuffo chose to settle in Liverpool rather than return to the Gold Coast. He was part of the city's growing West African community in Toxteth and worked at the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery. He attended Victory Day events in Liverpool from the 1990s onwards.
