Pilot Officer Jan Svoboda escaped Czechoslovakia after the German occupation and made his way to Britain via Poland and France. He flew Wellington bombers with the Czechoslovak squadron on anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic and bombing missions over Germany. After the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948, he could not return home and settled in Liverpool, where he joined a thriving community of Czech and Slovak exiles. He did not see his homeland again until the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
