Biography

Sergeant Jan Novak escaped Czechoslovakia after the German occupation and made his way to Britain via Poland and France. He served as a navigator with No. 311 Czechoslovak Squadron, initially on Coastal Command anti-submarine patrols and later on Bomber Command operations over Germany. He was killed when his Wellington bomber was shot down over the Netherlands in January 1944. He is commemorated at the Czech memorial in Birmingham.

Сержант Ян Новак бежал из Чехословакии после немецкой оккупации и добрался до Великобритании через Польшу и Францию. Он служил штурманом в 311-й Чехословацкой эскадрилье. Погиб, когда его бомбардировщик Веллингтон был сбит над Нидерландами в январе 1944 года. Его имя увековечено на Чешском мемориале в Бирмингеме.
