Biography

Pilot Officer Jan Svoboda escaped Czechoslovakia after the German occupation and made his way to Britain via Poland and France. He flew Wellington bombers with the Czechoslovak squadron on anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic and bombing missions over Germany. After the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948, he could not return home and settled in Liverpool, where he joined a thriving community of Czech and Slovak exiles. He did not see his homeland again until the Velvet Revolution in 1989.

Пилот-офицер Ян Свобода бежал из Чехословакии после немецкой оккупации и добрался до Британии. Он летал на бомбардировщиках «Веллингтон» в составе чехословацкой эскадрильи. После коммунистического переворота в 1948 году поселился в Ливерпуле.
