Biography
Flight Lieutenant Jan Kowalski was a Polish fighter pilot who escaped occupied Poland via Romania and France to reach Britain. He initially served with the famous No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron during the Battle of Britain, scoring three kills. He later transferred to No. 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron, where he flew Spitfires on offensive sweeps over France. After the war, unable to return to Communist Poland, he settled in Edinburgh and opened a watch repair shop on Clerk Street. He became a beloved figure in Edinburgh's small Polish community and attended Scottish and Polish remembrance ceremonies alike.

Лейтенант авиации Ян Ковальский был польским лётчиком-истребителем, бежавшим из оккупированной Польши через Румынию и Францию. Служил в знаменитой 303-й Польской истребительной эскадрилье во время Битвы за Британию, одержав три победы. Позже перевёлся в 603-ю эскадрилью (Город Эдинбург). После войны не смог вернуться в коммунистическую Польшу и обосновался в Эдинбурге.
