Biography
Chief Officer James Murphy survived three sinkings in the Battle of the Atlantic — his ships were torpedoed in 1940, 1941, and 1943. Each time he returned to sea within weeks. On his final voyage, his cargo ship carried tanks and ammunition to Murmansk as part of Convoy JW 58. The Merchant Navy suffered the highest casualty rate of any British service, and Murphy's story exemplifies their extraordinary courage. He lived in Liverpool all his life.
