James Beaumont

Major James Beaumont served in the Intelligence Corps, working on signals intelligence and code-breaking operations. An Oxford mathematician recruited from Balliol College, he initially worked at the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, contributing to the analysis of German Enigma traffic. In 1944, he was attached to 21st Army Group and deployed to Normandy after D-Day, where he worked on tactical signals intelligence during the advance through France and into Germany. His work helped identify German troop movements and contributed to the success of several operations in northwest Europe. Beaumont returned to Oxford after the war and lectured in mathematics until his retirement.
