Biography
Lieutenant Jack Thornton commanded a Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) with Coastal Forces, operating from bases along the English south coast. MTBs were fast, lightly armed craft that attacked enemy shipping in the English Channel and North Sea, often in close-range night actions at high speed. The casualty rate among MTB crews was exceptionally high. Jack's boat sank two enemy E-boats in a single night action off the French coast, earning him the DSC. After the war he settled in Brighton, drawn by the sea that had defined his wartime service.
