Biography

Corporal Jack Holland from Nottingham served with the Chindits—the long-range penetration groups that fought behind Japanese lines in Burma. In 1944, he marched over 200 miles through dense jungle to attack Japanese supply lines, living on air-dropped rations and suffering from malaria, dysentery, and monsoon conditions. The Chindits suffered over 50% casualties. Jack returned to Nottingham weighing just seven stone and rarely spoke about his experiences until the 1990s.
