Jack Counter

Lieutenant Commander Jack Counter served on convoy escort duty in some of the most dangerous waters of the war. His ships protected convoys in the North Atlantic and on the perilous Arctic route to Murmansk, where extreme cold, U-boats, and Luftwaffe attacks made every voyage a survival test.Counter was typical of the thousands of Royal Navy officers and ratings who endured years of gruelling convoy escort duty. Based out of Southampton, he participated in over 30 convoy operations. His quiet heroism represents the steady courage of the convoy escorts who kept Britain supplied.
