Marshal Ivan Konev was one of the most successful Soviet commanders of WW2. He led the 1st Ukrainian Front in some of the war's largest battles, including the Battle of Kursk, the liberation of Ukraine and Poland, and the final assault on Berlin. His forces liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp in January 1945. His advance from the south during the Battle of Berlin created a race with Zhukov's forces that ultimately led to the German capital's fall.
