Biography
Stoker Idris Khan was born in Cardiff's Butetown to a Yemeni-Welsh family, part of the oldest Muslim community in Britain. He served in the engine room of the cruiser HMS Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and off the coast of Burma. Working in temperatures exceeding 50°C below decks, stokers like Idris kept the ship powered during patrols and bombardment missions supporting the Burma campaign. After the war, he returned to Cardiff and worked in the merchant fleet. He was active in the Cardiff Muslim community and helped establish one of Wales's first mosques.

Кочегар Идрис Хан родился в Бьютауне, Кардифф, в йеменско-валлийской семье, части старейшей мусульманской общины Британии. Служил в машинном отделении крейсера HMS Mauritius в Индийском океане и у берегов Бирмы. Работая при температуре свыше 50°C, кочегары обеспечивали работу корабля. После войны вернулся в Кардифф и работал в торговом флоте. Помог основать одну из первых мечетей Уэльса.
