Biography

Hilda Raleigh (no relation to the company) worked at the Raleigh Bicycle Company factory in Nottingham, which was converted to war production. Instead of bicycles, the factory produced fuses for anti-aircraft shells, components for military vehicles, and parts for the famous Mosquito aircraft. Hilda operated a precision lathe for twelve-hour shifts, producing shell fuses to exacting tolerances. The work was monotonous but critically important — a single defective fuse could mean an anti-aircraft shell failing to detonate. She was proud that not one of her fuses was ever rejected by quality control.
