Biography

Hilda Foster joined the Women's Land Army at 18 and was posted to a farm near Lewes in Sussex. She worked ploughing fields, harvesting crops, and tending livestock — labour that was essential to feeding wartime Britain. The work was physically demanding and the pay was poor, but Hilda often said those years gave her a lifelong love of the Sussex Downs. She settled in Brighton after the war.
