Biography

Henry Gilbert was an Oxford don who was recruited into MI9, the branch of Military Intelligence responsible for helping Allied prisoners of war escape from enemy captivity. He helped organise escape lines through occupied France and the Low Countries, facilitating the return of over 300 Allied airmen to Britain. His academic cover as a medieval historian proved useful for understanding the geography of escape routes. He returned to Oxford after the war and never publicly discussed his wartime role.
