Helen McMullen

Sister Helen McMullen from Belfast was one of the first nurses to land in Normandy after D-Day, arriving on Gold Beach just days after the initial landings. She served in field hospitals throughout the advance across France and into Germany, treating both Allied wounded and German prisoners.McMullen was present at the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where nurses worked around the clock to save survivors. "Nothing could have prepared us for what we saw," she later recalled. Her quiet courage represents the thousands of military nurses who served in the most harrowing conditions.
