Harold Whittle

Private Harold Whittle registered as a conscientious objector but volunteered for non-combatant service with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served as a stretcher bearer during the Italian campaign, repeatedly going into no-man's land under fire to recover wounded soldiers. At the Battle of Monte Cassino, he carried eight wounded men to safety over two days of continuous shelling, earning the Military Medal. His story demonstrates that courage in war takes many forms. After the war he returned to Nottingham and became a Quaker community leader.
