Biography
Sapper Harold Whitaker from Leeds served in the 79th Armoured Division, known as "Hobart's Funnies," specialising in mine clearance with flail tanks. He landed on Gold Beach on D-Day+1 and spent months clearing paths through minefields across France, Belgium, and into Germany. Harold rarely spoke of the terrifying work but was eventually persuaded to share his story at a Leeds schools' remembrance assembly in 2005.
