Biography

Harold Clarke was a paratrooper with the 1st Airborne Division who fought at the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 — the failed Operation Market Garden. He was one of the relatively few who made it back across the Rhine after nine days of fierce fighting. The division suffered devastating losses at Arnhem. Harold later fought in the Rhine crossing in March 1945 as part of Operation Varsity. After the war he returned to Nottingham and worked at Raleigh Bicycles. He attended the annual Arnhem commemorations in the Netherlands every year until his health declined.
