Hannah Szenes

Hannah Szenes was a Hungarian-born Jewish poet who emigrated to Palestine and volunteered for the SOE to parachute behind enemy lines into Yugoslavia and Hungary in 1944. Her mission was to rescue Allied airmen and help organise Jewish resistance against the Nazi occupation.Captured crossing into Hungary, she was brutally tortured but refused to reveal her radio codes or betray her comrades. She was executed by firing squad in Budapest in November 1944, aged 23. Her poetry, especially "Blessed is the Match," became iconic in Holocaust remembrance.
