Biography

Piper Hamish MacPherson carried his bagpipes into battle with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. In the tradition of Scottish regiments, he played his pipes to inspire the men during the advance. At the Battle of Longstop Hill in Tunisia in April 1943, he played 'Scotland the Brave' as his battalion advanced uphill against entrenched German positions. He was killed during the assault, his pipes still in his hands. His sacrifice became legendary within the regiment, and a memorial pibroch was composed in his honour. He is buried at Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery in Tunisia.
