Biography

Captain Hamish MacDonald served with the reconstituted 51st (Highland) Division from 1942. Born in Glasgow, he joined the army in 1939 and saw action at El Alamein, where the Highland Division distinguished itself in the breakthrough of the Axis lines. He fought through Sicily and landed in Normandy on D-Day +1. The Highland Division advanced through France and crossed the Rhine into Germany. MacDonald was awarded the Military Cross for leading a daring night assault on a fortified German position near Bréville in June 1944. He returned to Glasgow and became a history teacher.

Капитан Хэмиш Макдональд служил в воссозданной 51-й (Хайлендской) дивизии с 1942 года. Родился в Глазго, поступил в армию в 1939 году. Участвовал в сражении при Эль-Аламейне, на Сицилии и в Нормандии. Награждён Военным крестом за ночную атаку на укреплённую немецкую позицию. Вернулся в Глазго и стал учителем истории.
