Biography
Captain Hamish Henderson served as an intelligence officer with the 51st Highland Division in North Africa and Italy. A poet and folklorist, he wrote the celebrated Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica based on his desert war experiences. He played a crucial role in negotiating the surrender of Italian forces in North Africa. In Italy, he made contact with partisan groups and gathered vital intelligence. After the war he became one of Scotland's foremost folklorists at the University of Edinburgh.
