Biography

Subedar Gurpal Singh Dhillon served with the 14th Punjab Regiment in the Burma campaign. A Sikh from Amritsar, he led his men through the jungles of Arakan and fought in the decisive Battle of Meiktila in 1945 that broke the back of the Japanese army in Burma. He was awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal for leadership. He settled in Southall, London, in 1955 and became a respected figure in the local Sikh community.
