Biography
Sergeant George Pemberton served with the Cambridgeshire Regiment in North Africa and Italy. He landed in Algeria in November 1942 as part of Operation Torch and fought through Tunisia before the Allied invasion of Sicily and mainland Italy. Pemberton participated in the fighting at Monte Cassino in early 1944, one of the most intense battles of the Italian campaign. He was promoted to Sergeant after the battle and continued north through the Gothic Line. After the war, he returned to his family's farm near Ely and later moved to Cambridge, where he became a groundsman at King's College.
