Biography
Sergeant Major Frank Howlett served with the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) in the Mediterranean theatre. He fought at El Alamein in October 1942 and through the Tunisian campaign. The regiment then landed in Italy, where Howlett distinguished himself during the crossing of the Garigliano River in January 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for leading a company-strength assault after all officers were killed or wounded. A miner's son from Hucknall, he returned to Nottingham after the war and became a foreman at Raleigh Bicycles.
