Biography

Evelyn Marsh organised the WVS (Women's Voluntary Service) operation in Oxfordshire throughout the war. She coordinated the billeting of over 3,000 evacuee children from London, ran mobile canteens for military personnel and civil defence workers, collected and distributed clothing, and organised knitting circles that produced thousands of socks and gloves for servicemen. The WVS was the largest voluntary organisation in the war, and women like Evelyn were its backbone. She received the British Empire Medal for her tireless service.
