Biography

Nurse Elizabeth Anne Hartley from Leeds served with the QAIMNS in North Africa and Italy. She nursed wounded soldiers at field hospitals behind the lines at El Alamein, in Sicily, and at Anzio. She worked 18-hour shifts during the heaviest fighting, treating soldiers from all nations. She returned to Leeds after the war and worked as a hospital matron until retirement.
