Junior Sergeant Elena Nikolaevna Petrova served as a navigator in the legendary 588th Night Bomber Regiment, known to the Germans as the "Night Witches." Flying obsolete Po-2 biplanes, she completed over 200 night bombing missions against German positions. After the war she studied medicine in Leningrad and emigrated to Edinburgh in 1975 with her Scottish husband, a lecturer at the university.
