Edith Walker

Edith Walker worked in the Royal Ordnance Factory at Nottingham, filling shells and assembling fuses for the war effort. The work was dangerous — several explosions killed workers at ordnance factories across the country. Edith worked twelve-hour shifts, six days a week, handling TNT that turned her skin yellow. Like thousands of other munitions workers, she received little recognition for her vital contribution. After the war she suffered from health problems related to chemical exposure but never complained, saying she was proud to have done her part.
