Biography
Edith Rhodes joined the Women's Land Army in 1942 at the age of 18, leaving her factory job in Leeds to work on farms across Yorkshire. Land Girls replaced the male agricultural workers who had gone to fight, ensuring Britain could continue to feed itself during the war. Edith worked dawn to dusk through all seasons, ploughing, harvesting, and tending livestock. After the war, she returned to Leeds and worked in a hospital canteen. She finally received official recognition for her Land Army service in 2008.
