Doris Cartwright

Doris Cartwright worked at the Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) factory in Small Heath, producing Browning machine guns and rifles for the war effort. The factory was a major target for the Luftwaffe, and on 19 November 1940, a direct hit killed 53 workers. Doris had been on the night shift the previous evening. She continued working at the factory throughout the war, often doing twelve-hour shifts six days a week. She was one of thousands of Birmingham women whose factory work was essential to arming British forces across every theatre of war.
