Alfred Dillwyn Knox

"Dilly" Knox was the brilliant but eccentric Cambridge classicist who became one of Britain's greatest codebreakers. A veteran of Room 40 in WWI where he helped crack German naval codes, Knox was instrumental in breaking the Italian Enigma and the Abwehr Enigma used by German intelligence.Knox recruited and trained many of the women who became key Bletchley Park codebreakers, including Mavis Lever who broke the Italian naval Enigma — intelligence that contributed to the British victory at the Battle of Cape Matapan. Knox died of cancer in February 1943, still working from his bed.
