Biography
Major Desmond Fitzgerald from Belfast served with the 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem in September 1944. He fought in the desperate defence of the bridge before being captured. He spent the rest of the war as a POW but escaped during a march in April 1945. Tragically, he was killed by a stray bullet just days before the war ended.
