Pilot Officer Cyril Barton, who enlisted in Southampton, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 30 March 1944. On a raid against Nuremberg, his Halifax bomber was attacked by a night fighter, wounding crew members and knocking out the intercom and one engine. Three of his crew bailed out, but Barton pressed on to bomb the target. On the return, with no navigator, no radio operator, and failing fuel, he crash-landed near Ryhope, County Durham, saving the lives of the remaining crew. He died of his injuries. He was 22.
