Bill Millin was Lord Lovat's personal piper who famously played his bagpipes on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. While men fell around him, Millin marched up and down the beach playing "Highland Laddie" and "The Road to the Isles." German snipers later said they did not shoot him because they thought he had gone mad. He then piped the commandos across Pegasus Bridge to link up with the airborne troops.
